- 4 Facts on the Types of Mechanics
Mechanics perform both routine maintenance and complex repairs on vehicles and other machinery. Technology has become more complex and computerized, and mechanics increasingly need formal training beyond high school, such as programs offered by vocational and technical colleges. The expected rate of pay for a mechanic depends on the type of machinery he repairs.
Car and Truck Mechanics
Car and truck mechanics, also known as automotive mechanics, service private vehicles that run on unleaded gasoline. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports automotive service technicians brought home an average wage of $18.78 per hour in 2012. Some mechanics are specially trained to service the engines of private vehicles and commercial vehicles that run on diesel fuel. As of 2012, diesel mechanics earned an average wage of $20.99 per hour.
Other Commercial Vehicles
Some mechanics specialize in the repair of other types of commercial vehicles. In general, they earn less than car and truck mechanics. For example, motorcycle mechanics reported an average pay rate of $16.78 an hour to the BLS in 2012. Mechanics who primarily repaired watercraft such as motorboats earned an average wage of $17.86 an hour. Small engine mechanics, who specialize in the repair of outdoor power equipment and small recreational vehicles, made an average of $15.30 an hour.
Industrial Vehicles
Mechanics who specialize primarily in the repair of agricultural vehicles and farm equipment reported an average wage of $17.16 an hour as of 2012. This is less than mechanics who work on the hydraulics and other systems of heavy construction vehicles, who reported an average wage of $22.66 per hour to the BLS. Rail car mechanics reported a similar average earning of $22.80 an hour.
Aircraft Mechanics
Aircraft mechanics make more money than almost any other type of mechanic. As of 2012, aircraft mechanics reported an average pay rate of $26.78 to the BLS. Avionics technicians, who specialize in the repair of aircraft navigation, radio and radar systems, reported an average hourly wage of $26.65.
Non-Vehicular Mechanics
Mechanics who work on equipment other than vehicles tend to make more money than regular auto mechanics. For example, mechanics who work on refrigerating, heating or air conditioning equipment -- commonly referred to as HVACR mechanics -- made an average of $22.03 an hour. Mechanics who specialize in the repair of industrial machinery, such as pipelines and factory equipment, earned an average of $23.41 an hour. The highest-paid type of mechanic repairs elevators and made an average of $35.64 an hour in 2012, the BLS reports.
